Text Box: NORTHGATE STATE SCHOOL

In April 1949 the first representations were made for a school to be built at Northgate East by Mr Frank Roberts MLA, Northgate East Progress Association, the Nundah ALP and local parents.

It took a further 9 years to find the site. In April 1958 the Brisbane City Council agreed to surrender the Park and Pound Reserve so that the site would be available for the establishment of a school to serve the children in the Northgate and Nundah East areas.

In April 1958 provision was made for the expenditure of 30,000 pounds for the School building.  There were to be 8 classrooms, 1 library, 1 office, 2 staff rooms, 1 health services room, 2 storerooms. The school catered to all primary classes – Grades 1 to 8.

On opening day, 27 January 1959, 292 pupils were enrolled.   By June 1962, due to rapid expansion, an extra 4 classrooms, a Head Teacher’s room plus extra rooms were built. This comprised the present front wing of the school.

By October 1962 the attendance had risen to 465 pupils but by  March 1969 the enrolment had fallen to 263 pupils.

In January 2008, 210 pupils were enrolled at Northgate State School.
