NEW BIKEWAY

BIKEWAY TO COMPLETE MISSING LINK

JULY 2002

The Brisbane City Council is set to complete a missing link in the Northside’s bikeway network.

A decision to allocate a further $5.25m towards Brisbane’s bikeway construction in this financial year, will help to get ‘bums on bike seats’ and reduce the numbers of vehicles on Brisbane’s roads.

A 7km long, 3m wide shared bicycle/pedestrian path will link the existing Kedron Brook bikeway at Nundah with the Boondall Wetlands and Nudgee Beach networks.  The new path will travel along the western bank of Kedron Brook from Hedley Ave to the boat ramp at Nudgee Beach.

35km link

Further links to be constructed at Sandgate will help provide a 35km continuous bikeway from Enoggera, along Kedron Brook through Nundah, Nudgee Beach to Sandgate and across the Hornibrook Highway Bridge to Redcliffe.  95% of the route will be on dedicated off-road pathways.

Reduce cars

Councillor Kim Flesser (NorthgateWard) said that the new bikeway is part of the Living in Brisbane 2010 Plan strategy for Brisbane to be an ‘Active and Healthy City’.

“The construction of this bikeway will have the added benefit of reducing the number of cars on the streets and lessening the pressure on our road network,” he said.

“A combination of flat concrete pathways and boardwalks through the mangrove forests and open grasslands will open up this previously inaccessible area for recreational activities, such as birdwatching, fishing and exercise.

“One section at Nundah will even feature grazing cattle nearby - a sight not often seen in metropolitan areas these days.

500km network

“The new bikeway will form a significant link in Brisbane’s existing 500km network of on and off-road bikeways, to create an even more bike friendly city.

“Work on the $3.2m Nundah Kedron Brook section of the bikeway is expected to start early next year, with completion due before June 2003.”

Consultation

The Council is keen to consult with residents in planning for the new bikeway.  Anyone who has suggestions should contact Councillor Flesser at the Northgate Ward Office on 3403 2210.
