One of the Council’s Stormwater Quality Improvement Devices (SQIDs) has recently been constructed on a former drain at Cressey St, Wavell Heights.
The trees and vegetation are becoming established and ducks and birds are already calling it ‘home’.
In order to acknowledge the tireless community work done by Mr Keith Boden for the Wavell Heights Neighbourhood Society, the Council agreed to my request to name the area ‘Keith Boden Wetlands’. Keith was the driving and guiding force behind the Neighbourhood Centre operated by the society on Edinburgh Castle Road. The society and the centre continue to provide a real community benefit to the residents of Brisbane.
Sadly Keith passed away in February 2010.
Flooding in this area has been an ongoing problem. The pollutant trap is designed to catch part of the 76 tonnes of sediment that is estimated to come from the drain each year into Kedron Brook. This sediment contributes to the flooding problems, so it’s expected that at least a small improvement will occur.
The wetlands are perfectly complimented by the adjacent $250,000 bikeway that has been completed to link the Kedron Brook circuit with the Wavell High School area.
This is a good example of Council implementing policies of making the suburbs nicer places to live in. Provision of native fauna habitat along watercourses is especially important.
