In October 1995, the Council’s ten year “Bicycle Brisbane Plan” was approved, setting the scene for improved cycling facilities, including bicycle lanes on roads. This ‘on road’ system is new to Brisbane and is expected to encourage more commuter cycling to work and school.
Providing facilities and promoting the use of bicycles is part of the Council’s commitment to protecting Brisbane’s unique lifestyle and keeping it the most livable city in Australia.
Local Bikeways
1. Nudgee Beach - The bikeway starts in Earnshaw Rd near the Banyo Rugby League Football Club on Childs Rd (adjacent to the Nudgee Bora Ring).
From the football club, travel along Childs Rd to the Nudgee Waterholes Reserve. Head north along Nudgee Road, past the Nudgee Golf Club and boat ramp (on the right). The bikeway finishes just past the Tuckeroo Park fishing platform and off leash dog area.
The final 500m needs to be ridden along O’Quinn St and turn right at Fortitude St, into the Nudgee Beach Recreational Reserve. Don’t forget to look at the Council Heritage Sign and go for a walk around the boardwalk to the Bird Hide.
2. Boondall Wetlands - The bikeway starts on Nudgee Road, just past the Nudgee Waste Transfer Station.
Head into the wetlands along the boarded path. On the left is Anne Beasley’s Lookout. The path to the top is steep, but the view is worth it. The next 5km winds through mangroves, grass plains and melaleuca and casuarina forests.
You will find the Boondall Wetlands Visitors Centre at the end. Don’t forget to take the 1km walk to the Nundah Creek Bird Hide.
This bikeway continues to the Boondall Entertainment Centre and soon to Deagon and Sandgate/Shorncliffe.
3. Kalinga Park - The bikeway starts at Hedley Av Nundah and winds its way along Kedron Brook all the way to Enoggera.
It is interesting to see the different aspects of the waterway - from reasonably natural looking to open drain. This is one of Brisbane’s most important wildlife habitat corridors.
At Shaw Park at separate path goes to the new Keith Boden Wetlands and into Wavell Heights. Another path travels around Bennelong Park to meet back up with the Kedron Brook.
4. Kedron Brook Wetlands Bikeway - this new bikeway was constructed in 2003. It runs along Kedron Brook from Hedley Ave Nundah to Nudgee Beach. This 6.5km link connects the bikeways at Nudgee Beach with the Kalinga Park bikeway network.
